Yodelers were hired for special occasions, and the hiring process was quite complicated. Each applicant had to provide letters of recommendations from both their friends and their enemies. It created lots of problems on many levels, starting with a definition of an enemy and confirming the level of feelings toward an applicant by those recommending them. It worked, though, because the committee knew well about the true character of each applicant, and singing was not that important, after all.
